THE STATE OF THE FITNESS INDUSTRY 2022

In the blink of an eye, welcome to October. 2022 has felt like a whirlwind for the fitness industry, from the reopening of gyms across the country, the dropping of mask mandates and personal training soaring back to record numbers…health and fitness has become an even bigger priority for Americans everywhere.

The pandemic caused a large setback in what was projected to be record years in 2020 and 2021 for the fitness industry. But have no fear, 2022 has proven to shake the industry right back on track. Being the CEO of HOMEFIT and owner of a 24 hour fitness facility, I get to see both sides of the industry.

Matthew Foster, CEO of HOMEFIT

Brick and mortar gyms are seeing steady growth so far in 2022…

  • 12% increase in gym usage rate from 2021 to 2022

  • 11% increase in gym memberships since 2021

  • 28% increase in check ins compared to 2021

The statistics look promising but 31% of brick and mortar gyms closed down and never reopened due to the lockdowns. In turn, this caused 1.5 million fitness industry jobs lost, a massive shake up for the industry. Many personal trainers were forced to transition into more of an independent role within the industry with 32% leaving the industry for good.

A key factor in the rebirth of the fitness industry is the continued growth of concierge fitness. At-home personal training and virtual fitness have become more popular, especially for busy professionals and stay at home parents. During the height of the pandemic, these concierge fitness services rose to the forefront as the go-to option for many people across the country and the numbers show this will continue to rise.

  • 18% of individuals who had a personal trainer in a gym setting have transitioned to a concierge service

  • Over 60% of individuals would prefer a personal trainer to come to their home instead of going to a gym

“The convenience aspect of an at home personal trainer is so helpful. As a business owner, my time is important and so is the time I am able to spend with my family”, says David, a longtime HOMEFIT client. He continues to say, “I don’t have to fight traffic going to the gym, my trainer shows up at my home, we get a workout in and I am able to carry on with my day.”

The mission behind HOMEFIT is to eliminate the barriers to healthy living. HOMEFIT has been serving our communities in Birmingham, Huntsville and Nashville for 10 years and we have helped over 1,500 clients improve their health and wellness.
